Specific leaf area (SLA): The one sided area of a fresh leaf devided by its oven-dry mass. By default: whole leaves including petioles, rachis and veins; relatively young but fully expanded leaves from the outer canopy (photosynthetically most active leaves); be aware of difference between "one sided" and "projected" leaf area, especially for needles.
