TRY GlossaryThe TRY Glossary provides definitions and additional information for plant traits in the context of the TRY database. The glossary is developed in close coordination with the Thesaurus Of Plant characteristics (Top Thesaurus), a community agreed terminology for plant functional diversity (Garnier et al. In Review). If an appropriate definition for a trait in the TRY database exists in Top Thesaurus or in another established plant trait vocabulary (i.e. the Plant Trait Ontology (TO), the Flora Phenotype Ontology (FLOPO)), it is re-used in the TRY Glossary. If a definition for a trait in the TRY database does not exist in these vocabularies it is developed in the context of the TRY Glossary, offering users the opportunity to provide feedback. Once the trait definition is stabilized in the TRY Glossary it will be submitted to Top Thesaurus. The TRY glossary presents each trait on an individual web-page, providing the following information: | Trait Name & Trait ID: | Name and unique identifier for the trait used in the context of the TRY database. | | Definition: | This field provides the definition of the trait. If possible, the terms used in the definition are linked to established ontologies: e.g. the Plant Ontology (PO) to define plant entities, the Phenotypic Quality Ontology (PATO) or the Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (ChEBI) to define the measured qualities, or the Thesaurus Of Plant Characteristics (Top Thesaurus). | | Comment: | Any kind of additional information about the respective trait. | | Abbreviation:: | Abbreviations that are either commonly used or that we suggest to use for the trait. | | Synonyms: | Different names for the same trait. | | Related Terms: | Names of similar traits. | | Formal Unit: | A formal expression of the units used to measure the trait, like length unit, or area unit / mass unit. | | Reference: | Reference for the trait definition. | | Measurement Protocol: | Links to established measurement protocols, i.e. in the context of the Plant Trait Handbook (Cornelissen et al. 2003, Perez-Harguindeguy et al. 2013) or on the PrometheusWiki, or new suggestions for measurements protocols. | | Related Definition: | Links to vocabularies, i.e. FLOPO or TO
, providing similar or different definitions for the respective trait. | | Last Change: | Date of last change of any entry on this page. | | Discussion Forum: | The forum provides the opportunity to comment and read comments about the definition and additional information with respect to the trait. |
